I use anthropomorphic forms to explore figurative representation. I am primarily interested in the relationship between self perception and how others see us. This series of torso vessels abstract the human form and allow me to endow each with its own narrative. Through carving, glaze, symbolism I am able to personalize each torso with meaning and then manipulate surface, size and color to contrast how the vessels present. I find that bright colors grab and hold most of the attention, allowing me to subvert the form with subtle unpredictable meaning. Currently I am exploring Issues of gender, class, hero-worship; religion and demagoguery are explored using symbolic narrative techniques.
Carving, sprig molds, special effects glaze and wood firing with heavy flashing are variously used on thrown and assembled torso like forms to create sculptures that require viewing from multiple angles to interpret. My intention is to create individual stories on each piece and by grouping multiple individuals together I am able to form narrative structures.
